Project Hail Mary is the new movie from the directing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo responsible for my two favourite animated films - Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Based on a novel by Andy Weir (who also wrote The Martian), the movie stars Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller and focuses on humanity’s last hope to save Earth from an extinction-level threat. The Sun's energy is slowly be drained by a strange cosmic phenomenon and nobody knows why.

A Gripping Premise That Hooks You Early
At a time when there are so many bad things happening across the world it's refreshing to find a movie positively focused on the themes of sacrifice, hope, and the power of collaboration.
The movie begins with Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) waking up alone on a spaceship, with no memory of who he is or why he is there. Slowly he gets to grips with his circumstances and we start to see the events that led him there through a series of flashbacks.
The approach works really well, constantly driving the narrative forward and gradually building the context behind it.
Strong Character Development and Performances
The performances across the board are excellent. Ryan Gosling effectively conveys the solitude and resolve of a man confronting insurmountable challenges, bringing depth and humour to the role.
Sandra Hüller, following on from phenomenal performances in The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall, is also tremendous as Eva Stratt, the head of the Hail Mary project. She's a no-nonsense leader who sees potential in Grace that he doesn't see himself. One particular 'karaoke' moment is a real standout.
You can't talk about the performances without mentioning 'Rocky'. He's in the trailer and has been discussed in the press tour but if you haven't seen any of those then maybe stop reading now!
Rocky is an alien that Grace meets on his journey and their relationship becomes the key part of the movie. Half CGI and half puppet (Lord and Miller used five pupetteers to help bring him to life), Rocky may be my new favourite movie alien! He's wonderfully realised and conveys a huge range of emotions despite having no actual face. Once he enters the film it almost becomes a buddy comedy set but the film also makes sure to increase the stakes and tension as their mission progresses.
Themes and Emotional Impact
The film’s emotional core lies in its portrayal of resilience and adaptability. It reminds viewers that even in the darkest moments, creativity and kindness can lead to survival and success.
Grace’s journey is not just about saving Earth but also about finding connection and purpose in isolation. I'm not ashamed to say it made me 'well up' on more than one occasion which I wasn't expecting!
Final Thoughts on Project Hail Mary
Project Hail Mary stands out as a thoughtful and really entertaining science fiction film. It combines a compelling story and strong performances whilst delivering emotional depth and suspense.
For fans of sci-fi and character-driven dramas, the film offers a very rewarding watch. It encourages viewers to reflect on humanity’s place in the universe and the importance of hope when facing the unknown.
I loved it and am already looking forward to watching it again.
